Culion Restoration and Rehabilitation Projects Turn Over Ceremony

During the celebration of World Leprosy Day on January 27, 2019, Culion Restoration and

Rehabilitation Projects Turn Over Ceremony was held. Among the heritage buildings and sites which became part of this significant event include those which are located at Barangay Tiza, namely: The Colony Hall, Leonard Wood Monument, General Kitchen Distribution Center, Tres Bolas, Grand Stairway, Colony Theater, Obras Publicas, Plaza Rizal and Glorieta.

The historic event was graced by the presence of Dr. Maria Francia Laxamana-DOH Assistant

Secretary, Dr. Rene Escalante-Chairman of NHCP, Ms. Lindsay Barrientos-Deputy Executive Director of UNACOM, Mayor Virginia N. De Vera- Culion Municipal Mayor, members of the Sangguniang Bayan, Local Government Unit, Culion Sanitarium and General Hospital officials and employees, Department of Education, Association of Culion Hansenites, religious congregations and the Culion community.

Through the efforts of Dr. Arturo C. Cunanan, Jr., Medical Center Chief I and the unending

assistance of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, the restoration of these heritage landmarks came to reality. Started in 2014 after the devastation of typhoon Yolanda, this project aimed to preserve the history of the island through the restoration of old buildings and parks and apply the area to be considered as a World Heritage Site which will eventually boost Culion tourism industry.

The event was a collaboration of different agencies and individuals. A thanksgiving, unity and

heritage mass marked the beginning of the activities. A lively street dance presentation by the students of Loyola College of Culion and pupils of the DepEd elementary schools welcomed the guests who unveiled the historical marker at the colony hall. A flag raising ceremony was also held which was followed by the historic turnover of the Phase I and II projects from National Historical Commission to CSGH. Parks were also turned over to LGU and Barangay Tiza. The community reminisced the painful yet beautiful past of the people affected by leprosy through a historical walk and a magnificent cultural presentation.

Through the theme “Pagbabalik-tanaw, Pasasalamat, Pagkakaisa at Pagsulong”, the activity aimed

for the people of Culion especially the youth to appreciate the story of a once isolated island, yet through unity, managed to transform into an island of healing and recovery. It is also hoped that the community continue to live with a grateful heart and work hard for the betterment of the lives of the generations to come.
